Representational artist Arthur Fredericks shares his journey from growing up in New York City to careers in massage therapy and photography, and ultimately to making art in the Berkshires. Along the way, Arthur reflects on learning to trust his perspective, slowing down enough to notice what others might miss, and finding his own way through life and art.
Representational artist Arthur Fredericks joins Dr. Dennis Rebelo to trace a life shaped by observation, working with his hands, and figuring things out for himself. Growing up in Queens and later near Rockaway Beach, Arthur remembers spending much of his childhood outside while also discovering drawing at an early age, recreating comics, sports photographs, and the human form simply to see if he could do it. That willingness to try difficult things continued into adulthood, first through massage therapy, where he developed an understanding of anatomy and the body, and later through photography, which began with black-and-white darkroom classes and eventually became a career lasting more than a decade. Arthur explains how photography taught him to stop when something caught his attention rather than walk past it, an instinct that remains central to his drawing today.
Arthur also describes developing his own artistic approach, moving beyond the precise methods he was taught and toward a lighter touch that reflects what he sees and what feels complete to him. He discusses being diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2023, seeking another medical opinion, undergoing surgery, and reconsidering the pace and direction of life alongside his wife. Their search for an artist community eventually brought them from Long Island to the Berkshires, where Arthur now lives among other artists at the Eclipse Mill in North Adams. Today, he draws around town, welcomes conversations with people who stop to watch him work, and encourages others, including children, to make art themselves. For Arthur, art offers a reason to stop, look more carefully, and recognize details that can disappear when life becomes focused only on getting somewhere.
